Jean-François and Marie-Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre Foundation

Fondation Jean-François & Marie-Laure
de Clermont-Tonnerre

Non-Profit Foundation based in Brussels

A message from our founder

The CT foundation was created by Marie-Laure and myself in 2010. After having served for many years in various important charitable foundations, we wanted to get closer to the field with certainly smaller but more concentrated means. The foundation is fully funded by our personal income and does not appeal for donation, It is the guarantee of our freedom.

My desire to create this foundation was influenced by the work of my grandfather, Francois de Clermont-Tonnerre, co-founder of the institute of life (« Institut de la vie ») with Professor Marois in the 1950s. Thus, the CT foundation is focused on life : what characterizes human being is the awareness that he is a living being as a part of a whole, endowed with the gigantic power of intelligence, a power that comes with an immense responsibility towards our planet and the life it shelters. Our wish is to promote creation, whether artistic or scientific, while emphasizing the immense responsibility that this capacity for creation generates.

The tools for this ambition are:

  1. Support for our cultural heritage, monuments, artistic and literary works (Palais de Tokyo, National Library, Royal Opera House).

2. Support for young artists in the creative process that will define our society in terms of artistic history (School of Fine Arts, artistic creation competition, etc.)

3. Support for the scientific research necessary for the evolution of our species and the development of our humanity (Brain research, EMBL, Sainsbury Welcome center UK, etc.)

4. Support for any approach aimed at raising awareness of the environmental impact of our development and the promotion of a sustainable growth project (Collège de France, Tara Project, etc.)

The project is ambitious and we do not claim to change the world, no one can do it individually and our means do not allow it. But it is our individual responsibility to try to contribute, on our modest scale, to the future of our humanity and that of our environment.
